Presiding Bishop Curry’s address at the first business session of Diocesan Convention:

People filled the cathedral to see The Presiding Bishop and hear his sermon.  He passionately spoke about the ultimate love that Jesus Christ showed in his sacrifice on the cross. He explained how that kind of love can change the world.

He spoke about how love can transform the world we live in from the nightmare that it is to the dream that God intended for it. He said, “Imagine your corporate boardroom. Imagine your classroom. Imagine the streets of our city. Imagine this nation. Imagine the United Nations. Imagine the world if love was the way of life. ”

We are again grateful as a diocese to have heard the words and felt the presence of the Presiding Bishop throughout his time here, and feel the lasting impression that he left.

He addressed the convention Friday at the business session and during a banquet held that evening. Guests included various leaders from local faith communities, including General Authorities of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the new bishop of the Salt Lake City Diocese of the Roman Catholic Church.

On Saturday, Presiding Bishop Curry preached the sermon at the Holy Eucharist. His dynamic preaching engaged all who attended. Themes included love over hate, following the path of Jesus and coming together as one people of God.  All of his teachings were in line with his well-known message – his passion for the Jesus Movement. “That movement has changed the world before and it can change the world again,” he said.

His own words sum up his presence at the convention: “May God bless you, may God keep you, and may God hold each one of us in those almighty hands of love.”

Bishop Tuttle’s Book of Common Prayer, church registries of long-gone churches, and mitres belonging to Bishops Watson and Charles were on display, among other treasures.

The booth also featured videos of Tuttle’s journal and historical photos of the diocese.

At the 150th table, task force members distributed mints, pins, bags and hats with the beautiful 150th logo. The hats proved to be particularly popular.

Throughout the year, Episcopalians are encouraged to display the logo proudly, using souvenirs as well as banners and posters to promote excitement and togetherness during this occasion.

There will be five regional celebrations held later in the year throughout the diocese. More information to come.

Kathalin described the experience as “being excited and at the same time humbled” to have the opportunity to serve the people of God as a Deacon.  She was especially touched by Bishop Curry’s reference to her and Patricia as “sisters.” She remarks that “when I started studying theology almost 20 years ago, I had no idea where I was being led. Holding tight to God’s loving hand through it all has brought me to this wondrous time.

Patricia said it was an honor to be ordained by Bishop Hayashi with Bishop Curry in attendance. “My process toward ordination was fulfilled with many wonderful people and experiences thanks to the clergy and lay staff of the Diocese of Utah, St. Peter’s, Clearfield, and St. Michael’s, Brigham City. I look forward to many more blessings as I begin my ordained ministry journey. ”
